Adhesive cure and temperature

A windshield is structural. It is bonded to the vehicle body with urethane adhesive, and that bond is what holds the glass in place in a crash and gives the passenger airbag something solid to deploy against. Urethane cures as a function of temperature and humidity, and cold conditions extend the safe drive-away time the adhesive manufacturer specifies.

In Jackson this is not theoretical. A driveway install at 15 degrees in a wind is a different curing environment from a heated bay. • Dynamic calibration is done by driving the vehicle at a specified speed on well-marked roads while the system relearns. In a Jackson winter, clear lane markings are not always available.
• Static calibration requires the vehicle parked on a level floor, at a measured distance from a manufacturer-specified target board, under controlled lighting. Many vehicles require static calibration, or a static procedure followed by a dynamic one.

Our advice is simple. Fix chips early. The Auto Glass Safety Council publishes ROLAGS, the ANSI-accredited standard defining when laminated glass damage can be repaired and when it must be replaced. Size, depth and location all matter, and damage in the driver’s primary viewing area may not be repairable at any size.
